THE SIXTH GENERATION

As the 21st century nears, most of the Captain’s sixth generation descendants are children or teenagers.

Thus far, six have been identified but there undoubtedly will be many more. The sixers have made a fast start with the two sons of Roy C. and Sharon Kirkman of Boulder, CO, young men who have embarked on impressive careers

United States Air Force first lieutenant David Christian Kirkman currently is the co-pilot of a KC-135 Stratotanker crew based at Fairchild AFB, Spokane, WA.

Born Feb. 14, 1973 in Boulder, Dave is the eldest son of Roy and Sharon Kirkman and the family’s fireplug (5'7" and 180 pounds). He was a student-athlete at Boulder’s Fairview High School: a tailback, linebacker and captain on the football team; a pitcher and right fielder on the baseball team, and a member of the National Honor Society.

A bright guy, Dave attended Colorado State University on an Air Force Reserve Officers Training program scholarship and graduated with a degree in computer science. He then won his Air Force pilot’s wings in December 1997 after learning to fly at Vance AFB, Enid, OK, and Randolph Field and Lackland AFB, TX. Dave became a KC-135 pilot at Alpus AFB, OK and is now a member of the 96th Air Refueling Squadron of the Air Mobility Command.

"This is one great job," he says. "I love to fly; there’s nothing like it in the world." Dave recently spent a month at Mildenhall Royal Air Force Base in the United Kingdom and flew midair refueling missions over France, Germany, Switzerland, Croatia and Ireland. As yet, Dave hasn’t decided whether he’ll be a career Air Force officer or fly commercial jetliners.

Dave also was an Eagle Scout in his father’s Boy Scout troop in Boulder and a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and an AFROTC academic officer at Colorado State. He owns a home in Spokane.

John Clifton Kirkman, the younger son of Roy and Sharon Kirkman of Boulder, CO, is an electrical engineer who plans and designs lighting systems for commercial and residential buildings.

Born Nov. 26, 1975, John also graduated from Boulder’s Fairview High School where he was a linebacker and tight end on the football team and a shotputter and discus heaver on the track team. The taller of Roy and Sharon’s sons, he’s 6 feet and 185 pounds.

John also is an alumnus of Colorado State University where he won an electrical engineering degree and was vice president and treasurer of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He began his professional career with Belfray Engineering Co. of Denver in 1998.

Another of the many Eagle Scout Kirkmans, John was a member of his father’s Boy Scout troop in Boulder and a high adventurer, in his case, a cave explorer in South Dakota’s Medicine Mountains.

John has an apartment in Boulder.
